bullet  General Notes:

John is a graphic artist and owns his own business, AmeriCal, Inc. in Omaha, NE. Johnny also served in the US Army during Vietnam. Melinda is in the nursing field.

At Cary Schlotman's funeral Sept. 11, 2003 Johnny Peterson was sharing a few stories about Grandpa Cerny. One of the stories was when Grandpa was making beer or wine during the prohibition days. He did not sell the spirits....only used for family and friends. Evidently the federal agents heard of Grandpa making the spirits and went to the farm to check on it. Frances (Johnny's Mother) and Mary were home at the time. So it happened that Grandpa was stirring a batch at the very moment the agents came to the door. Frances answered the door and was scared....she whispered to Mary that they should deter the agents to the parlour and then dump the spirit batch in the backyard. Mary said that was not the thing to do. The agents did take Grandpa with them to O'Neill for questioning and no one knows the results of that questioning. Grandpa did not quit making spirits. Mary and Frances were just a bit "on the outs" after that day.

Johhny also talked about Grandpa playing cards in town almost every day. Janet (youngest daughter) had a 1938 gray colored Plymouth and would drive Grandpa to town and he would play cards in the tavern. He usually played with the same four gentlemen....Grandpa, Hans Sieh, a Schulz and another gentlemen. There were several guys watching these four play cards.....and when one of the four died it was a scramble for the others to get into the group of four. When it was time for supper, Janet would take Johnny along to pick-up Grandpa. And since ladies did not go into bars at that time.....Johnny would go in and tell Grandpa that it was time for supper. Grandpa would say, "Ok, just one more hand". Many days someone would take Grandpa to town again after supper and he would play cards until 10:00 p.m.

Johnny told about the "Witch Story" that Grandpa Cerny used to tell. When Grandpa was a kid there was a big house that included the house, barn and chicken coop all together. One day they butchered a critter and hung it in the barn.
A couple of the kids stayed in the barn to keep an eye on the critter. A witch comes in and spread his wings and got milk. The kids called Dad and the whole neighborhood went "witch hunting". They caught the witch and burned him up!

Beezie and Johnny thought that Janet Cerny Sattler purchased the very first car sold from the dealership in Naper.

Johnny also talked about Frank teasing Clem about all the kids he had and how they had trouble getting them into the car. Frank told Clem he would have to get a bigger car or quit having kids. This obviously was before Frank got married as Frank and Mildred had five kids to fit into their car!!!!!!!
