Obituary of Rosie Malek:
Funeral services for Rosie Mae Malek were held Saturday, Nov 21, 1987 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Gregory, SD with Pastor Steve Ziebarth officiating.
Music was provided by Kathie Ziebarth, soloist, DeNalda Fortuna, Organist and Mary Beth Gergen, Pianist. Marie Gustufson and Joy Schonebaum were in charge of registration with Z.C.B.J. Lodge ladies, Irene Nelson and Anna Brotsky flower attendants.
Casket bearers were Frank Zidko, John Smutny, Robert Smutny, Louis Matucha, Stanley Cabelka, Charles Zidko,DDS. Honorary pallbearers were all of her friends.
Interment was at Graceland Cemetery, Burke, SD.
Rose May Smutny was born May 7, 1907 to John Smutny and Anna Smutny near Brainard, NE and died Nov 17, 1987 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
In 1909 she and her parents moved to Gregory County and settled on a farm southeast of Gregory. She attended country school and graduated from Gregory High School in 1929.
On April 25, 1938, she was united in marriage to Felix R. Malek. They lived on a farm southwest of Burke until 1975 when they moved to Gregory where Rosie lived until her death. To this union one daughter, Katherine was born.
Rosie was a 50 year pin recipient and held office positions in the Z.C.B.J. Lodge of Gregory and was also in the Burke Senior Citizens Center.
Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother Edward (1947) and her husband, Felix in 1983.
She is survived by her daughter, Katherine; one grandson David and son-in-law Don Leask of LaMirado, CA; one sister-in-law, Tillie Zidko of Spencer, NE; one niece, Joan Kenzy of IA; and nephews, John and Robert Smutny of Gregory; Joe Smutny of Simi Valley, CA; George Smutny of Bellingham, WA; Frank Zidko and Dr. Charles Zidko of Spencer, NE and many other relatives and friends.
Rose married Felix Robert Malek, son of Anton Cyril Malek and Katerina (Katherine) Brezina Malek, on 25 Apr 1938 in Burke, SD. (Felix Robert Malek was born on 11 Sep 1899 in Naper, NE and died on 31 Mar 1983 in Lake Andes, SD.)
