Henry Clay Van Brocklin was born Nov. 17, 1873 at North Bend, Saunders County, NE. He lived his entire life in Nebraska - coming to Knox County at the age of four. Henry died April 8, 1952 and is buried at Creighton, NE Greenwood Cemetery.

TO PLANT OATS 25 YEARS OLD
Henry Van Brocklin, a farmer east of Venus, is planning to sow oats this spring, some of which he says are twenty-five years old. Mr. Van Brocklin, twenty-five years ago put his oats after threshing in a bin which he has used ever since as an oat bin and in all these years, the bin has never been entirely empty. Each year the new crop was piled on top of the old oats left from the previous year's feeding. This spring, due to the poor oats crop the past few years it will be necessary to empty the bin to sow the new crop and Mr. Van Brocklin feels sure that some of the oats at the bottom are twenty-five years old. 1934.
Within the family records there is a letter written to Henry and Minnie Van Brocklin on or about the 24th birthday of Minnie Van Brocklin. The letter is from Dorothea Thurnau, the Mother of Louis Thurnau. The letter was probably writtin around 1899. It is written in German. Henry and Minnie were married December 27, 1898. Wilma Van Brocklin Sukup had the letter translated by Mrs. Leo (Elsie) Hamling of Creighton, NE in 1982.
The letter says:
To my grandchildren Heinrich and Minnie:
I wish to thank you for that picture that you sent me and I wish you much happiness and blessings. Remain true and faithful then you will receive many blessings. Minnie, I congratulate you on your 24th birthday.
Heinrich and Minnie, I am sending you a small wedding gift. It isn't much but it truly comes from the heart from lyour grandmother 83 years old.
We all send our greetings to Heinrich, Minnie, Annie(they must have called Johanna Annie), and Louis.
