William Jacob Van Brocklin was born at Verdigris in Knox County. He is the sixth child of Daniel and Elizabeth Van Brocklin. William moved with his parents to Creighton, NE in 1904. William went to South Dakota to homestead. At about the same time (1906) Frank Hodges from Clayton, Iowa moved to Stanley County South Dakota where he and three daughters Mae, Sara and Louise each took 160 Acres and built a house in the center. William homesteaded in Manilla township in South Dakota. William, now 28 years old met Sara Frances Hodges. He married Sara Frances Hodges June 6, 1910 near Belleplaine, SD by Rev. A. O'Hara. Sara is the daughter of Frank Hodges and Mary M. deLorimer.

Margaret Elizabeth Van Brocklin was born April 12, 1911. Drought was prevalent in South Dakota so the young couple moved to Verdigre, Nebraska. Sara's sister Mae Hodges also went to Verdigre to live with her sister and family. Mae Hodges died March 7, 1912 in Verdigre and is buried at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, IA. William and Sara moved to the Daniel Van Brocklin home place in March 1912. Mary Louise was born there December 29, 1912. In 1914, Will and Sara moved via railroad to New York State. Their belongings loaded on railroad cars- horses, cattle, chickens and household goods. Even Sara's piano. They arrived in Milford, New York in Feb 1914. The family lived in a house - once a tavern with 14 rooms. The farm was a wooded farm with its own saw mill. Stones came up every year to be piled due to the heavy freezes. The stones were used for fences. Wilma Frances was born on September 26, 1914. In 1916, Will and Sarah moved back to Nebraska. They visited Karl and Elizabeth Von Tersch on route home at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Elizabeth Von Tersch is a sister to William Van Brocklin. William and Sara moved to a farm east of Creighton.
Later they moved to a Winnetoon Farm and Elizabeth Ann was born on Oct 6, 1918. This was the year of the flu epidemic. William had a farm sale on Jan 12, 1920 and moved the family to Creighton.

Sara Frances Hodges Van Brocklin died Oct. 22, 1920 and is buried at St. Ludger Cemetery in Creighton, NE.

William married Effie Stubben on April 15, 1925. She was born Aug 17, 1899 and the daughter of Andrew Stubben and Ollie Titus. In 1943 William and Effie moved to Omaha where they lived until his death Dec 23, 1958. Effie moved back to Creighton and lived until her death Aug 10, 1975. She had Parkinson Disease.
