Theresia Cek (May) Kurka

Theresia (Cek) May was married to Frank May before she married Joseph Kurka in 1881. Theresia and Frank had 5 children one dying in infancy. Mary, Carl, Emma and Mathilda..

After the marriage of Joseph Kurka and Theresia Cek May on March 19, 1881, the newlyweds lived on his homestead. Their first home was of logs which he cut along the Niobrara River. He often related how drought and grasshoppers took everything the farmers raised. He built a fine house on his farm as well as other buildings.

One large barn was completely finished and ready for the painter when a toronado picked it off the farmyard and carried it across the riverland and left it a mass of splinters. His teams and cattle and hired man (John Sucha) were in the barn at the time and fortunately all were safe and unhurt. After living thirty-four yearas on this farm he decided to retire. In 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Kurka moved to Verdigre to spend their remaining years. Mr. Kurka was always active, kept a fine garden and had a beautiful yard with all kinds of flowers. Joseph Kurka was known for his fine team of bay-colored ponies and made many enjoyable trips back to the site of his homestead to visit wiwth friends and families and his children in the community, each winter he chopped a supply of wood for his stoves.

Joseph died Decembner 26, 1931 and Theresia died January 12, 1943. They are buried in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemtery at Verdigre, NE.

Joseph Kurka and Theresia Cek May Kurka had the following children: Frank Joseph, Ernest William, Fred , Bertha, Rose and Julia.

Theresia married Joseph Kurka, son of Wenzel Kurka and Matilda Maier Kurka, on 19 Mar 1881. (Joseph Kurka was born on 4 Feb 1852 in Grosslippen, Bohemia and died on 26 Dec 1931.)
