Son of John Keeney & Mary Hempstead. Little is kown about the life of Christopher Keeney in St. Louis, other than that he practiced as a physician.
Dr. Keeney's mother, Mary Hempstead was born in New London, CT, daughter of Stephen Hempstead and Mary Lewis Hempstead. There she married John Keeney, a widowed father and sea captaiin 1806. The following year their son Christopher was born. John Keeney died in New London, CT in 1810.
On June 12, 1811, Mary Hempstead, her son Christopher and step-daughter Charlotte Keeney left New London for St. Louis, MO. There, they joined Mary's father Stephen and Mary Mewis Hempstead. Brothers Edward and Stephen Jr. who had previously settled in St. Louis, taking advantage of the city's rapid growth following the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark expedition. The Hempstead family settled on land just north of the city. They later gave part of their land to create Bellefontaine Cemetery.
