Eugene Sukup, founder of Sukup Manufacturing Co., the maker of iconic grain bins and dryers in Sheffield, died after a brief hospital stay. Sukup was 89. His family said "many will remember Eugene as a servant leader." participating in several church, education, local 4-H and care center boards and committees. Sukup moved to Iowa from Nebraska in 1938, "in the midst of the Great Depression Dust Bowl," his obituary skaid. He married Mary Elizabeth Bielefeld in 1952. Sukup, who still served as board chairman, founded the company with Mary in 1963 in a welding shop in Sheffield, IA. Today Sukup Manufacturing holds more than 80 patents and sells its products in more than 85 countries. Eugene is survived by his wife, Mary; is son Charles and Wife Mary Sukup of Dougherty, and his Son Steven and Wife Vicki Sukup of Clear Lake; and six grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Nick Sukup, Coral Springs, FL; Crystal and Matt Koch (Lily, Zander, and Grace), and Emily and Andy Schmitt (Wynn and Celia) all of Clear Lake; Elizabeth Sukup, Ames and Andrew Sukup, Dougherty; and Jonathan Sukup, Dallas, TX. The company employs about 700 workers and has more than 1 million square feet under roofs worldwide.
