Hempstead, village, Nassau, Co., S.E. New York on Long Island; incorporated 1853. The village is part of the town of Hempstead (Pop, 1980, 738,517), which includes about twenty other incorporated communities such as Long Beach, Garden City and Valley Stream. Hempstead village is chiefly a residential suburb of New York City and a commercial center for the surrounding area; it also contains some light manufacturing industries. Hofstra University (1935) is here. Settled in the early 1640's by British colonists, the community is names for Hemel Hempstead, England, Pop (1970) 39,411 and population (1980) 40,404.

Sir Robert Hempstead was one of 36 grantees of original house lots in New London, Conn; later Hempstead Long Island. Hempstead, Long Island, New York WP -13.

The settlement of New London commenced with the marking out of the town plot and a few rude habitations constructed for temporary use in the year 1645. The government of the town was organized in 1648 & from that date a regular set of records is exact. There is no death registered until about 1652, but from incidental sources it is ascertained that two of the first body of planters died in the earlier part of the same year, whether here or elsewhere is uncertain (Miss Caulkins) Robert Hempstead was one of the original settlers of New London, CT.
