Second son of a pioneer family, John William Sukup was born to Andrew and Mary Sedivy Sukup on January 10, 1882, on a farm homestead located southwest of Verdigre, Ne. Verdigre was then a river located in that area also known as Verdigris River. John's parents were among the first settlers to homestead in the Walnut community.
John Sukup attended school in a sod school house located on his father's farm. Later he attended school at O'Neill and Wayne. He was one of the older sons of Andrew and Mary and was ambitious to help his pioneer father.
On April 18, 1910, John was married to Julia Kurka of Dukeville, Nebraska at St. Wenceslaus Church in Verdigre, NE. Rev. Charles Z. Petlach officiated at the marriage ceremony.
John and Julia lived on a farm southwest of Verdigre where their children were all born. In 1952 they retired from farming and moved to Creighton, NE. where they lived until their death. John died June 26, 1958. They are buried in St. Wenceslaus Catholi Cemetery in Verdigre, NE.
Six children were born to this couple: Rose, Julia, John, Walter, Adolph and Deloris. Sixteen grandchildren were born to John and Julia and 52 great grandchildren.
John married Julia Lavinia Kurka Sukup, daughter of Joseph Kurka and Theresia Cek (May) Kurka, on 18 Apr 1910 in St. Wenceslaus Church- Verdigre, NE.
