Frank Hodges along with children left Dubuque, IA in 1906 and travelled to South Dakota to homestead land. They homesteaded four plots at 160 acres each. They built the house in the corners of the four sections meaning one fourth of the house was on a corner of the 160 acres.
Francis married Mary Margaret De Lorimier Hodges, daughter of Louis Verneuil De Lorimier and Sarah Frances Holt Hempstead De Lorimier, on 23 Apr 1867 in Clayton, IA. (Mary Margaret De Lorimier Hodges was born on 12 Jan 1845 in Dubuque, IA and died on 22 Feb 1886.)
